UNDP is the UN's global development network

We are on the ground in almost all developing countries, working with them to strengthen democratic governance and find local solutions to poverty, crisis prevention and recovery, environmental issues and HIV/AIDS. In all our work, we seek to empower women and promote human rights. UNDP's network links global and national efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals agreed by world leaders in 2000.  As countries develop local capacity to meet the Goals, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.

The annual Human Development Report, commissioned by UNDP, focuses the global debate on key development issues, providing new measurement tools, innovative analysis and often controversial policy proposals. The global Report's analytical framework and inclusive approach carry over into regional, national and local Human Development Reports, also supported by UNDP.

In each country office, the UNDP Resident Representative normally also serves as the Resident Coordinator of development activities for the United Nations system as a whole. Globally, UNDP Administrator chairs meetings of the the UN Development Group. Through such coordination, UNDP seeks to ensure the most effective use of UN and international aid resources.

The mission of our Nordic Office is to inform the Nordic public, media and governments about the Millennium Development Goals and UNDP’s efforts to meet them. The office is located in Copenhagen, with sub offices in Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki.

We currently have twelve staff members who are lead by our Nordic Director Jakob Simonsen (three permanent staff, five fixed-term agents, two Junior Professional Officers and two project staff). The office is part of UNDP’s Partnerships Bureau, which is responsible for the organisation's external relations. UNDP does not carry out any programme activities in the Nordic region, except for the Swedish Millennium Development Goal campaign, which is funded by the Swedish government.
